Multiple myeloma Myth Buster #04 · Causes & warning signs

If there is no bone pain, multiple myeloma is impossible?

✕ Not true
Fact

Some people have no bone pain at diagnosis. Myeloma may first appear as anaemia, kidney problems, repeated infections or abnormal blood test results.

Routine blood testsUnexplained anaemia, a high protein level or kidney changes can be the first clue to myeloma.

Why people believe it

Myeloma is closely linked with bone pain, so people without it may not be suspected.

What the evidence shows

Myeloma can affect the blood, kidneys and immune system before it causes bone pain. Many people are first found to have unexplained anaemia, kidney problems, frequent infections, or a high protein level or high ESR on routine blood tests, and may be treated for these for months before the cause is found.

What you can do

If anaemia, kidney problems or repeated infections have no clear explanation, ask whether myeloma tests are needed.
