Myeloma is detected by measuring the abnormal protein that myeloma cells make, called a paraprotein or M-protein. Special blood tests, serum protein electrophoresis, immunofixation and free light chains, along with urine tests, find it. Routine tests, such as a blood count, may be normal early on.
