Multiple myeloma Myth Buster #07 · Diagnosis & investigations

A normal X-ray means the bones are healthy and myeloma is excluded?

✕ Not true
Fact

Plain X-rays can miss early bone damage. Whole-body low-dose CT, MRI or PET-CT can show changes that X-rays can't.

Whole-body low-dose CTShows bone damage that a plain X-ray can miss, using a low dose of radiation.

Why people believe it

X-rays are the most familiar bone test, so a normal report feels reassuring.

What the evidence shows

Bone damage usually has to be quite advanced before it shows on a plain X-ray. Whole-body low-dose CT scans, MRI and PET-CT can find smaller areas of damage, and are now the preferred tests for checking bones in myeloma.

What you can do

Ask which imaging is recommended to check your bones, and whether a whole-body low-dose CT is available.
