A normal calcium level rules out multiple myeloma?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many people with myeloma have normal calcium levels. High calcium is only one possible sign of active myeloma.

Why people believe it

High calcium is a well-known feature of myeloma, so a normal result can seem reassuring.

What the evidence shows

Doctors look for several signs of active myeloma: high calcium, kidney problems, anaemia and bone damage. Most people have only some of these, and many have normal calcium. Specific tests for the abnormal protein are needed.

What you can do

Don't rely on one normal test. If myeloma is suspected, ask for the specific myeloma blood and urine tests.
