Pancreatic cancer Myth Buster #08 · Symptoms & early detection

Back pain can't be caused by pancreatic cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Pancreatic cancer can cause persistent upper tummy pain that spreads to the back. But most back pain has other causes.

Why people believe it

Back pain is so common that no one thinks of the pancreas, which lies deep in the body, close to the spine.

What the evidence shows

The pancreas sits at the back of the upper abdomen, near the nerves in front of the spine. A tumour can cause a dull, boring pain in the upper tummy that spreads to the middle of the back, often worse lying flat and eased by leaning forward. Most back pain, though, comes from muscles, joints and discs.

What you can do

See a doctor about back pain that is new, persistent and not related to movement, especially with tummy pain, weight loss or jaundice.
