Pancreatic cancer Myth Buster #09 · Symptoms & early detection

A normal abdominal ultrasound completely rules out pancreatic cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

The pancreas may not be fully visible on ultrasound because of bowel gas or body build. A special CT, MRI or endoscopic ultrasound may be needed when suspicion remains.

Ultrasound is usually the first scan done for tummy symptoms, and a normal report feels reassuring.

What the evidence shows

The pancreas lies deep behind the stomach and bowel, and gas in the bowel often hides part of it on ultrasound, especially the tail. A pancreas-protocol CT scan, an MRI with MRCP, or an endoscopic ultrasound gives much clearer pictures.

What you can do

If symptoms continue despite a normal ultrasound, ask whether a CT, MRI or endoscopic ultrasound is needed.
