Why people believe it

In India, jaundice is commonly blamed on hepatitis or gallstones, and is often treated with home remedies or herbal medicines.

What the evidence shows

Jaundice has many causes, including hepatitis and gallstones. But when it appears without pain or fever, often with itching, dark urine and pale stools, it may be caused by a blockage of the bile duct, sometimes from a tumour in the pancreas or the bile duct. An ultrasound, blood tests and often a CT scan can find the cause.

What you can do

See a doctor promptly for jaundice, especially if it is painless, and avoid delaying with home remedies.
