Pancreatic cancer Myth Buster #02 · Causes & risk

Only people who smoke or drink alcohol get pancreatic cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Smoking is an established cause. Chronic pancreatitis, excess weight, diabetes and inherited factors also contribute, and many patients have no obvious risk factor.

Why people believe it

Pancreatic problems are strongly associated with alcohol, so people who don't drink may feel safe.

What the evidence shows

Smoking roughly doubles the risk of pancreatic cancer. Other factors include long-standing inflammation of the pancreas (chronic pancreatitis), including the tropical form seen in South India, excess weight, type 2 diabetes and inherited gene changes. Heavy alcohol use contributes mainly by causing pancreatitis. Many people with pancreatic cancer have none of these.

What you can do

Stop smoking, keep a healthy weight, and control diabetes. If you have chronic pancreatitis, keep up your regular follow-up.
