Pancreatic cancer Myth Buster #03 · Causes & risk

Pancreatic cancer is always hereditary?

✕ Not true
Fact

Most pancreatic cancers are not inherited. About 5 to 10% are linked to inherited gene changes, though estimates vary.

Why people believe it

When a relative has pancreatic cancer, family members often fear they will inevitably get it too.

What the evidence shows

Most pancreatic cancers develop from changes that happen during a person's life. A minority are linked to inherited gene changes, such as BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2 or Lynch syndrome. Genetic testing is now recommended for people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, because the result can guide their treatment and matters for their relatives.

What you can do

If you have pancreatic cancer, ask about genetic testing. If two or more close relatives had pancreatic cancer, ask your doctor about genetic counselling.
