Pancreatic cancer Myth Buster #11 · Diagnosis & treatment

A pancreatic biopsy makes cancer spread?

✕ Not true
Fact

Tissue sampling guided by endoscopic ultrasound is generally safe when needed. Some clearly operable tumours go straight to surgery without a biopsy.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)An ultrasound probe on the tip of an endoscope, passed into the stomach, looks closely at the pancreas and can take a sample.

Why people believe it

Many people fear that a needle will disturb the tumour and make it spread.

What the evidence shows

Most pancreatic biopsies are taken through an endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): a thin camera with an ultrasound probe is passed into the stomach, and a fine needle takes a sample through the stomach wall. It is safe, and is needed before chemotherapy is started. When a tumour is clearly removable, surgeons sometimes operate without a biopsy first.

What you can do

Ask whether a biopsy is needed in your case, how it will be done, and how it fits with your treatment plan.
