Pancreatic cancer Myth Buster #10 · Symptoms & early detection

A normal CA 19-9 blood test rules out pancreatic cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

CA 19-9 can be normal in pancreatic cancer, particularly early disease or in people who don't produce this marker. It can also rise in non-cancerous bile duct blockage. It is not reliable on its own.

Why people believe it

CA 19-9 is often called the "pancreatic cancer marker", so people treat it as a yes-or-no test.

What the evidence shows

CA 19-9 is a protein measured in the blood. It is often normal in early pancreatic cancer, and some people's bodies cannot make it at all. It can also be raised by gallstones, jaundice from other causes, or pancreatitis. It is most useful for monitoring treatment in people already diagnosed.

What you can do

Don't rely on a CA 19-9 result alone. If you have symptoms, make sure you also have the right scan.
