All sarcomas are the same disease and get the same treatment?

There are more than 100 types of sarcoma, and the exact type decides the treatment, which can range from surgery alone to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted medicines or immunotherapy.

Sarcomas are named after the tissue they resemble, such as fat (liposarcoma), smooth muscle (leiomyosarcoma) or blood vessels (angiosarcoma). Some respond well to chemotherapy and others hardly at all; some need radiotherapy and some do not; a few carry special gene changes that can be treated with targeted medicines. Finding the exact type often needs special stains and genetic tests on the biopsy, and review by a pathologist experienced in sarcoma.
