Sarcoma Myth Buster #22 · Diagnosis

If antibiotics relieve the bone pain, cancer is ruled out?

✕ Not true
Fact

Temporary improvement doesn't rule out cancer. Pain or swelling that persists or comes back needs a fresh assessment.

MRI scanIf bone pain or swelling comes back, an MRI shows the bone marrow and soft tissues in much more detail than an X-ray.

Why people believe it

When pain eases on antibiotics, it seems to confirm that the problem was an infection, and families and doctors may stop looking further.

What the evidence shows

Bone tumour pain naturally comes and goes, so it may ease by coincidence while a child is on antibiotics. Some tumours, particularly Ewing sarcoma, also cause inflammation that can settle for a while. The improvement can be falsely reassuring, and months may pass before the pain or swelling returns and the diagnosis is made.

What you can do

If bone pain or swelling comes back after a course of antibiotics, or never fully goes away, go back to the doctor and ask whether an MRI or a specialist review is needed.
