Sarcoma Myth Buster #26 · Diagnosis

A fast-growing tumour must be more dangerous than a slow-growing one?

✕ Not true
Fact

Growth speed alone can't tell how dangerous a tumour is. Some malignant sarcomas grow quite slowly.

BiopsyOnly a biopsy, examined by a specialist pathologist, shows what a lump really is, however fast or slowly it has grown.

Why people believe it

It seems logical that a lump that has been there, almost unchanged, for months or years must be harmless.

What the evidence shows

Some sarcomas grow slowly over months or even years, and are mistaken for harmless lumps because they have been there so long. Synovial sarcoma, for example, can grow slowly and may even be painful at times. On the other hand, some fast-growing lumps turn out to be harmless, such as an abscess or a bruise. Only the scans and a biopsy, examined by a pathologist, show what a lump really is.

What you can do

Don't be reassured just because a lump has grown slowly. A lump that is deep, larger than a golf ball, or getting bigger at any speed, should be checked.
