Sarcoma Myth Buster #30 · Survival & quality of life

A child cured of sarcoma will never develop another cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Some survivors have a higher risk of a new, different cancer later in life, because of inherited factors or the treatment they received.

Survivorship follow-upLong-term check-ups continue into adulthood, often in a dedicated survivorship clinic.

Why people believe it

After a cure, it is natural to feel that cancer is behind the family for good.

What the evidence shows

Most survivors never develop another cancer, but the risk is higher than in the general population. Some chemotherapy medicines and radiotherapy can slightly raise the risk of new cancers years later, and some children have inherited conditions, such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome, that raise the risk of several cancers. Knowing this helps survivors and their doctors watch for early signs.
