If a needle test (FNAC) says a lump is not cancer, sarcoma is ruled out?
A fine needle test takes only a few cells and often misses sarcoma. A suspicious lump needs a scan and a core needle biopsy, read by a specialist pathologist.
Why people believe it
FNAC is quick, cheap and widely used for lumps in the neck, breast and thyroid, so people expect it to work for every lump.
What the evidence shows
Sarcomas contain many kinds of cells, and some parts of a tumour can look harmless. A fine needle collects only a small number of loose cells, so it can miss the cancer, or fail to show its exact type and grade, which decide the treatment. A core needle biopsy, taken after an MRI and guided by ultrasound or CT, removes thin strips of tissue that can be tested properly, including with special stains and genetic tests.
What you can do
If a lump is growing, deep or larger than a golf ball, don't let a normal FNAC report end the matter. Ask whether an MRI and a core needle biopsy are needed.
