Screening and prevention Myth Buster #03 · Prevention & lifestyle

If cancer runs in the family, prevention is useless?

✕ Not true
Fact

Inherited risk can raise the chance of cancer, but genetic counselling, closer screening and selected risk-reducing measures can help.

Why people believe it

When several relatives have had cancer, people often feel it is their fate.

What the evidence shows

For families with a strong history, or a known gene change such as BRCA or Lynch syndrome, much can be done: earlier and more frequent screening, risk-reducing medicines or surgery in some cases, and healthy habits, which still lower risk. Genetic counselling helps work out who in the family is at risk and what to do.

What you can do

If several close relatives have had cancer, especially at young ages, ask your doctor about genetic counselling.
