Cancer is caused mainly by eating sugar?

✕ Not true
Fact

Sugar doesn't specially "feed" cancer in a way that makes cutting it out a cure or reliable prevention. But too many calories and excess weight raise the risk of several cancers.

Cancer cells use glucose for energy, so sugar is often blamed.

What the evidence shows

Every cell in the body uses glucose, and the body controls blood sugar tightly whatever you eat. What matters for cancer risk is body weight: excess weight is linked to at least a dozen cancers, including breast (after menopause), bowel, womb, kidney and liver cancers. Sugary drinks and foods contribute to weight gain.

What you can do

Limit sugary drinks and processed foods to help keep a healthy weight, rather than fearing sugar itself.
