Only smokers get cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Tobacco is a major preventable cause of cancer, but cancer also occurs in people who have never smoked. Smokeless tobacco and areca nut products carry important cancer risks too.

Quitting tobaccoYour risk falls year by year after you quit, at any age. Medicines and counselling make quitting more likely to succeed.

Why people believe it

Many non-smokers feel protected, and people who chew tobacco often don't think of themselves as tobacco users.

What the evidence shows

Smoking causes many cancers, but in India, chewing tobacco (gutka, khaini, zarda) and areca nut cause a large share of mouth and throat cancers. Many cancers, such as breast, colorectal and some lung cancers, also occur in people who have never used tobacco at all.

What you can do

Avoid tobacco in every form. Whatever your habits, report persistent symptoms and attend recommended screening.
