Mammography causes breast cancer because of the radiation?

✕ Not true
Fact

Mammography uses a low dose of radiation. For women in the recommended age groups, the benefits of screening generally outweigh the small radiation risk.

MammogramA low-dose X-ray of the breast, used for screening and to check symptoms. The breast is pressed briefly between two plates to get a clear picture.

Why people believe it

Radiation is associated with cancer, so some women avoid mammograms altogether.

What the evidence shows

A mammogram uses a very low dose, about the same as the natural background radiation we receive in seven weeks of everyday life. For women aged 40 and above, the benefit of finding cancer early is far greater than this small risk.

What you can do

Don't let fear of radiation keep you from screening. Tell the staff if you are, or might be, pregnant.
