Screening and prevention Myth Buster #09 · Breast & cervical screening

Cervical cancer screening is unnecessary after HPV vaccination?

✕ Not true
Fact

HPV vaccination greatly reduces the risk, but doesn't remove it. Vaccinated women should continue recommended cervical screening.

Why people believe it

If the vaccine prevents cervical cancer, screening seems unnecessary.

What the evidence shows

The vaccine protects against the main cancer-causing HPV types, but not all of them, and it works best when given before any exposure to the virus. Screening, with an HPV test, Pap smear or visual check (VIA), finds changes caused by other types or earlier infections.

What you can do

Vaccinated or not, attend cervical screening as advised, usually between ages 30 and 65 in India.
