Screening and prevention Myth Buster #06 · Breast & cervical screening

Breast cancer screening is necessary only when a lump develops?

✕ Not true
Fact

Screening mammography aims to find breast cancer before any symptoms appear. A new breast symptom needs a diagnostic assessment, not just routine screening.

Why people believe it

Many women think tests are only for when something is wrong.

What the evidence shows

Screening is for women without symptoms, to find cancers when they are small and most treatable. A mammogram every one to two years is usually advised from age 40, and especially between 50 and 74, as recommended by your doctor. In India, the national programme also offers a free clinical breast examination by trained health workers to women aged 30 to 65. Women at high risk, such as those with a BRCA gene change, start earlier. A woman who notices a lump or other change needs a different approach: a prompt examination and diagnostic tests, whatever the date of her last screening.

What you can do

Ask your doctor when to start breast screening. If you notice a change, see a doctor straight away; don't wait for your next screening appointment.
