Screening and prevention Myth Buster #08 · Breast & cervical screening

A normal mammogram guarantees that breast cancer is absent?

✕ Not true
Fact

Mammography can miss some cancers, especially in dense breasts. A new lump, nipple discharge or other worrying change still needs to be checked.

A normal result feels like a clean bill of health.

What the evidence shows

Mammograms find most breast cancers, but some are hidden, particularly in dense breast tissue, which is common in younger women. New cancers can also develop between screenings. That is why any new change needs attention, however recent your last normal mammogram was.

What you can do

Keep your screening schedule, and see a doctor promptly for any new breast change.
