Stage IV and palliative care Myth Buster #25 · More myths

A patient must choose either hope or palliative care?

✕ Not true
Fact

Hope can include more time, relief from symptoms, meaningful activities, family connection and personal goals, even when cure isn't possible.

Why people believe it

Accepting palliative care can feel like giving up hope.

What the evidence shows

Hope often changes shape during serious illness: hope for a good day, for time with family, to attend a wedding, to be comfortable, to be at home. Palliative care supports these hopes, and can be given alongside treatment that aims to control the cancer. Choosing it is not choosing despair.

What you can do

Talk with your family and care team about what you are hoping for, so care can help you reach it.
