Stage IV and palliative care Myth Buster #13 · Palliative care

Palliative care is only about pain medicines?

✕ Not true
Fact

Palliative care also addresses nausea, breathlessness, tiredness, sleep problems, nutrition, emotional distress, the strain on caregivers and practical concerns.

Why people believe it

Palliative care is often associated only with morphine.

What the evidence shows

Pain control is important, but palliative care looks after the whole person and family: other symptoms, appetite and nutrition, anxiety and low mood, spiritual concerns, communication within the family, and practical matters such as care at home, equipment and planning ahead. Caregivers are supported too.

What you can do

Tell the palliative care team about every concern, physical, emotional or practical; they are there to help with all of them.
