Stage IV and palliative care Myth Buster #11 · Palliative care

Palliative care means the doctors have given up?

✕ Not true
Fact

Palliative care is active medical care focused on relieving symptoms, reducing distress and improving quality of life. It can be given alongside cancer treatment.

Why people believe it

The word "palliative" is often heard as "nothing more can be done".

What the evidence shows

Palliative care teams specialise in controlling pain, breathlessness, nausea and other symptoms, and in supporting emotional, practical and family needs. It is not the same as stopping cancer treatment: many people receive chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiotherapy while also getting palliative care.

What you can do

Ask to be referred to palliative care whenever symptoms or stress are hard to manage, at any stage of advanced cancer.
