Stage IV and palliative care Myth Buster #12 · Palliative care

Palliative care should begin only during the final days of life?

✕ Not true
Fact

Palliative care can start at the diagnosis of advanced cancer, or earlier when there are significant symptoms or needs. Early involvement is recommended for many people with advanced cancer.

Starting palliative care early, alongside cancer treatment, improves symptom control, mood and quality of life, and helps families plan. In one well-known study of people with advanced lung cancer, those who received early palliative care alongside their treatment had a better quality of life, and lived somewhat longer.

What you can do

If you or a family member has advanced cancer, ask about palliative care now, rather than waiting.
