Surgery has no role in stage IV cancer?

Surgery may help some people with limited spread, or relieve problems such as a blockage, bleeding or a weakened bone. It is not routinely helpful in every case.

In selected people, removing a few areas of spread can improve the outlook, as in some bowel cancers with liver deposits. Surgery can also relieve problems: unblocking the bowel, stopping bleeding, or stabilising a bone at risk of breaking, or the spine. For many people with widespread cancer, though, surgery would add risk without benefit.
