Chemotherapy is useless once cancer has spread?

For many cancers, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted medicines or immunotherapy can control stage IV cancer for months or years, and relieve symptoms such as pain or breathlessness. The expected benefit differs between cancers, so it is important to understand what treatment is likely to achieve, weighed against its side effects.
