Very early cancers confined to the lining can sometimes be removed through the endoscope. For many squamous cell cancers, chemotherapy and radiotherapy given together (definitive chemoradiotherapy) is an established treatment with the aim of cure, without an operation. Other cancers are treated with chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy before surgery.
