Stomach and oesophageal cancer Myth Buster #12 · Oesophageal cancer

Oesophageal cancer always causes pain?

✕ Not true
Fact

Early oesophageal cancer may cause no symptoms. Worsening swallowing difficulty, weight loss or bringing food back up can occur without much pain.

Doctor's examinationA doctor's examination is the first step. Mention every symptom, and how long it has lasted.

Why people believe it

People expect cancer to hurt, so painless swallowing problems are easy to dismiss.

What the evidence shows

The main symptom of oesophageal cancer is usually difficulty swallowing, rather than pain. Others include losing weight without trying, bringing food back up, hoarseness, or coughing when swallowing. Pain, when it occurs, is often a later symptom.

What you can do

Don't wait for pain. Get worsening swallowing difficulty or unexplained weight loss checked promptly.
