Stomach and oesophageal cancer Myth Buster #19 · Oesophageal cancer

If surgery is impossible, nothing can be done?

✕ Not true
Fact

Chemoradiotherapy, medicines and procedures to relieve swallowing can all offer real benefit, depending on the stage, fitness and type of cancer.

Oesophageal stentA small mesh tube placed through the endoscope holds the food pipe open, to make swallowing easier.

Why people believe it

Being told surgery isn't possible can sound like being told there is no hope.

What the evidence shows

For people who can't have surgery, chemoradiotherapy can still be given with the aim of cure in some cases. For advanced cancer, chemotherapy and immunotherapy can control the disease. Swallowing can often be improved with a stent, a small tube placed through the endoscope to hold the food pipe open, or with radiotherapy, and nutrition support helps people stay strong.

What you can do

Ask about every option for treating the cancer and for helping you swallow and eat, and consider a second opinion.
