Thyroid cancer surgery always causes permanent voice loss?

Voice changes can happen, for example from injury to the nerve that controls the vocal cords, but permanent voice loss is not inevitable. An experienced surgeon and proper assessment minimise the risk.

The nerves that control the vocal cords run very close to the thyroid. A hoarse or weak voice for a few days or weeks after surgery is fairly common, and usually recovers. Permanent damage is uncommon in experienced hands. The parathyroid glands, which control calcium, are also nearby, so some people have temporarily low calcium after surgery.
