Children who are cured of a brain tumour need no more check-ups?
Children treated for brain tumours need long-term follow-up for growth, hormones, hearing, vision, learning and late effects, even when the tumour has gone.

Why people believe it
Once a child is cured, families understandably want to leave hospitals behind.
What the evidence shows
Surgery, radiotherapy and some chemotherapy drugs can affect a growing brain and body. Possible late effects include slow growth and lack of growth hormone, an underactive thyroid, early or delayed puberty, hearing loss (after cisplatin), vision problems, difficulty with memory and learning, and, rarely, a second tumour or blood vessel narrowing years after radiotherapy. Most of these can be treated if they are found early, for example with hormone replacement, hearing aids or extra support at school.
What you can do
Keep yearly survivorship visits even when your child is well. Tell teachers about the treatment so learning support can be arranged, and keep a written summary of the treatment received.
