Hair never grows back after brain radiotherapy?

✕ Not true
Fact

Hair loss happens only where the radiation beams pass and usually starts to regrow 2 to 6 months after treatment. With high doses, a patch may stay thin or bald.

Why people believe it

Hair loss is very visible and upsetting, and people see others with patches of baldness after treatment.

What the evidence shows

Radiotherapy affects hair only in the treated area, unlike some chemotherapy, which affects all body hair. After standard doses, most people’s hair grows back over months, sometimes thinner or a slightly different texture. Areas that received a high dose may remain bald permanently. Radiosurgery for small targets often causes little or no hair loss. Temozolomide, the tablet chemotherapy for gliomas, causes only mild hair thinning in most people.

What you can do

Ask your team which areas may lose hair and whether it is likely to come back. Use a soft cap or scarf, protect the scalp from sun, and wash gently with mild shampoo during treatment.
