Brain tumour Myth Buster #06 · Symptoms & diagnosis

Every headache means a brain tumour?

✕ Not true
Fact

Most headaches have nothing to do with brain tumours. Headaches that keep getting worse, especially with other neurological symptoms, need a doctor's check.

Why people believe it

When a headache won't go away, it is easy to imagine the worst, especially after reading about brain tumours online.

What the evidence shows

Almost all headaches are caused by tension, migraine, sinus problems, eye strain, dehydration, poor sleep or overuse of painkillers. Brain tumours are a rare cause: when people with headache and a normal examination have an MRI, only about 1 to 2 in 100 scans show a tumour, and only a small minority of brain tumours cause headache with no other symptom. Warning signs that need a doctor are: a new headache after the age of 50; a change in a long-standing headache; headache that wakes you from sleep or is worse on lying down, coughing or straining; headache with vomiting, fever or a stiff neck; headache with weakness, confusion, speech or vision changes or a seizure; any new headache in someone who has had cancer; and headache in a child aged 6 or under.

Headache warning signs that need a check

  • A new headache that keeps getting worse over days or weeks
  • Headaches that wake you from sleep, or are worst on waking
  • Headache with vomiting, especially in the morning
  • Headache that gets worse with coughing, sneezing or bending
  • Headache with blurred or double vision, weakness, confusion, a seizure or a change in personality

What you can do

For an ordinary headache, rest, fluids and simple painkillers are usually enough, but avoid taking painkillers on most days, which can itself cause daily headaches. If your headache has any of the warning signs above, see a doctor. Go to an emergency department straight away for a sudden, severe “worst ever” headache.
