A tumour found in the brain must have started in the brain?

Many tumours in the brain have spread from cancers elsewhere in the body, most commonly the lung, breast and skin (melanoma).

In adults, tumours that have spread to the brain from elsewhere (brain metastases) are more common than tumours that start in the brain. They most often come from lung cancer, breast cancer and melanoma, and also from kidney and bowel cancers. This matters because treatment is based on the original cancer. Many brain metastases can be treated effectively with radiosurgery, surgery or medicines that reach the brain.

If you have had cancer anywhere in the body, tell your doctor promptly about new headaches, seizures, weakness, confusion or balance problems.
