Why people believe it

"Did my stress cause this?" is one of the questions women ask most after a diagnosis. Looking back, many find a difficult period in their lives and blame themselves.

What the evidence shows

Large studies that followed many thousands of women have not found that stress causes breast cancer. You did not cause your cancer. Stress during diagnosis and treatment is real, though, and it deserves care.

What you can do

If you are finding diagnosis or treatment hard, say so. Talk to your care team, your family, or a counsellor. You don't have to carry it alone.
