Sugar feeds cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Cutting out sugar cannot starve a tumour. A healthy weight matters more.

Why people believe it

Cancer cells use glucose for energy, so it is easy to conclude that eating sugar feeds a tumour and that cutting it out will starve it.

What the evidence shows

Every cell in your body, from your brain to your muscles, uses glucose. Your body tightly controls blood glucose levels whatever you eat, so removing sugar from your diet cannot selectively deprive a tumour of fuel. What does matter is body weight: excess weight, especially after menopause, raises breast cancer risk.

What you can do

Focus on a healthy weight, good diabetes control and limiting sugary drinks, rather than fearing every grain of sugar. If you are on treatment, ask about a balanced diet that keeps your strength up.
