Leg pain in children is just growing pains?

✕ Not true
Fact

Growing pains are common and harmless. But bone pain that keeps getting worse, wakes a child at night, or causes limping needs a doctor's check.

X-rayThe first test for bone pain or swelling. If symptoms continue, an MRI may still be needed.

Why people believe it

Many children have aching legs in the evening, and 'growing pains' is a familiar, reassuring explanation. Children also fall and bump their legs often while playing.

What the evidence shows

True growing pains usually affect both legs, come in the evening or night, and are gone by morning. The child runs and plays normally the next day. Pain from leukaemia or a bone tumour behaves differently: it keeps coming back in the same place, gets worse over time, may cause swelling or limping, and doesn't settle by morning. Bone tumours are more common in older children and teenagers, often around the knee.

Signs to watch for

  • Pain in one particular spot that keeps coming back
  • Pain that wakes the child at night or is still there in the morning
  • Limping, refusing to walk, or not wanting to use an arm or leg
  • Swelling or a lump over a bone or joint

What you can do

If your child's pain has any of these features, or lasts more than two weeks, see a doctor. An X-ray and a blood test are usually the first steps.
