Camera flashes often cause red-eye or odd reflections, so a strange glow in one eye is easy to dismiss as a photo effect. The child usually seems perfectly well.

In a normal flash photo, the pupils look red or black. A white or yellowish reflection in one pupil can mean something is blocking the back of the eye, and one cause is retinoblastoma. It usually affects children under five, and is often first spotted by a parent in a photograph. A new squint (eyes not looking in the same direction) can be another early sign. Found early, retinoblastoma is highly curable, and the eye and vision can often be saved.
