A painless lump is nothing to worry about?

Most lumps in children are swollen glands from an infection. But a lump that keeps growing, feels firm, or doesn't go away needs checking, especially if it doesn't hurt.

Many parents assume that a lump that doesn't hurt can't be serious. And children often get swollen glands in the neck with colds and sore throats, so a lump in the neck seems ordinary.

Glands (lymph nodes) swell when they are fighting an infection, and these usually feel tender and shrink within two to four weeks. Lumps from lymphoma or other cancers are often painless, firm or rubbery, and keep growing. A painless lump is not a reassuring sign on its own.

- A lump in the neck, armpit, groin or elsewhere that keeps getting bigger
- A lump that is still there after two to four weeks
- A lump that feels hard or fixed in place
- A lump just above the collarbone, at any size

Show any lump that is growing, firm, or still present after a few weeks to a doctor. They may suggest an ultrasound, and sometimes a small biopsy to find out exactly what it is.
