Colorectal cancer Myth Buster #01 · Causes & risk

Colorectal cancer occurs only in elderly people?

✕ Not true
Fact

The risk rises with age, but colorectal cancer also occurs in younger adults. Cancer diagnosed before 50 is an important and growing concern.

Why people believe it

Bowel cancer is usually thought of as a disease of older people, so younger adults with bleeding or bowel changes are often told it is piles or a stomach upset.

What the evidence shows

Most colorectal (bowel) cancers are diagnosed after 50, but the number of cases in younger adults has been rising in many countries. Younger people are often diagnosed later, because their symptoms are put down to something minor for months.

What you can do

Don't dismiss rectal bleeding, a lasting change in bowel habit or unexplained anaemia because of your age. Get it checked.
