Spicy food directly causes colorectal cancer?
There isn't good evidence that spicy food itself causes colorectal cancer. Processed meat, excess body fat and alcohol have much stronger links.
There is no need to give up spices to prevent bowel cancer. Focus on the habits that matter more: fibre, activity, a healthy weight, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco.

Spicy food can cause burning and discomfort, so it is easy to assume it damages the bowel.
What the evidence shows
Research has not shown that chillies or spices cause bowel cancer. The factors with stronger evidence are processed meat, large amounts of red meat, excess body fat, alcohol, smoking and physical inactivity. Spicy food can make piles or a small tear near the back passage (a fissure) sting, which is a different problem.
