Colorectal cancer Myth Buster #20 · Advanced disease & survivorship

Once colorectal cancer treatment is finished, follow-up isn't needed?

✕ Not true
Fact

Follow-up helps find any return of the cancer early, as well as new polyps or cancers in the bowel. The schedule depends on the stage and treatment received.

Follow-upRegular check-ups find any return of the cancer early, and help with late effects of treatment.

Why people believe it

After surgery and treatment, many people want to put hospital visits behind them, especially when they feel well.

What the evidence shows

Most recurrences happen in the first two to three years, and some can still be cured if found early, for example by removing a single liver deposit. People who have had bowel cancer are also more likely to develop new polyps or a second bowel cancer, which follow-up colonoscopies can find and remove.
