A normal CEA blood test means I do not have bowel cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

CEA is normal in many people who have bowel cancer, especially early cancer. It cannot be used to rule cancer in or out.

Blood testA useful guide, but no single routine blood test can confirm or rule out this cancer on its own.

Why people believe it

CEA is often called a “cancer marker”, so a normal result seems reassuring.

What the evidence shows

CEA is raised in only a proportion of bowel cancers and can also be raised by smoking, liver disease and inflammation. Doctors use it to measure a baseline before treatment and to watch for the cancer coming back afterwards. Bleeding, a change in bowel habit or anaemia needs a colonoscopy, whatever the CEA result.

What you can do

Do not let a normal blood test delay a colonoscopy if you have symptoms.
