Why people believe it

People feel that a healthy appetite and regular bowel movements mean their bowel must be fine.

What the evidence shows

Most bowel cancers start as small growths called polyps, which can take many years to turn into cancer, and usually cause no symptoms. Even early cancers are often silent. Sometimes the only sign is iron-deficiency anaemia from slow, hidden bleeding. This is why screening tests are offered to people without symptoms.

What you can do

Ask your doctor about bowel cancer screening from the age they recommend, usually 45 to 50, or earlier if you have a family history.
