Eating less will starve the cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Cutting down food does not starve a cancer; it weakens the body. Good nutrition helps people cope with surgery and chemotherapy and recover faster.

Doctor's examinationA doctor's examination is the first step. Mention every symptom, and how long it has lasted.

Why people believe it

It seems logical that a cancer “feeds” on food, and sugar is often blamed.

What the evidence shows

Cancers take what they need from the body whatever you eat. Weight and muscle loss make surgery riskier and chemotherapy harder to complete. People with bowel cancer should eat enough protein and energy, adjusting fibre and food types if they have a stoma or diarrhoea; a dietitian can help.

What you can do

Eat regular meals with protein (dal, eggs, milk, curd, fish or meat), weigh yourself weekly, and tell your team if you are losing weight.
