Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #31 · Causes & risk

HPV throat cancer means my partner was unfaithful, and my partner will get cancer too?

✕ Not true
Fact

HPV is very common and usually caught many years before a cancer appears, so it cannot tell when or from whom it came. Long-term partners have not been found to be at higher risk, and the cancer itself does not spread from person to person.

HPV vaccinationProtects against the high-risk HPV types that cause throat (oropharyngeal), cervical and other cancers. Works best when given before any exposure to the virus.

Why people believe it

HPV is passed on through intimate contact, so a diagnosis can bring shame, blame and fear for the partner.

What the evidence shows

Most adults meet HPV at some time in their lives, and the body usually clears it without anyone knowing. In a small number of people the virus stays in the tonsils or the back of the tongue, and a cancer may appear ten years or more later. So the infection could have happened long before the present relationship. In a study of long-term partners of people with HPV throat cancer, the partners had cancer-causing oral HPV no more often than the general population. The cancer cannot be caught by kissing, sharing food or living together. HPV throat cancers usually respond very well to treatment.

Facts to share with your family

  • HPV is very common; most people clear it on their own
  • The cancer usually appears 10 years or more after infection
  • Long-term partners have not been found to be at higher risk
  • The cancer itself is not contagious
  • HPV vaccine for children protects against the cancer-causing types

What you can do

Talk openly with your doctor and partner; there is no need for blame. Long-term partners do not need special tests. Vaccinating children against HPV before they become sexually active protects them from the cancer-causing types. Stopping smoking improves the outlook of HPV throat cancer.
