Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #25 · Causes & risk

Once mouth or throat cancer is diagnosed, there is no point stopping tobacco?

✕ Not true
Fact

Stopping tobacco and areca nut after diagnosis helps treatment work, reduces side effects and lowers the risk of a second cancer.

Quitting tobaccoYour risk falls year by year after you quit, at any age. Medicines and counselling make quitting more likely to succeed.

Why people believe it

People feel the damage is already done, or they use tobacco to cope with stress.

What the evidence shows

People who keep smoking during radiotherapy respond less well and live shorter lives on average. Continued tobacco and alcohol also cause second cancers of the mouth, throat, food pipe and lungs, which affect up to one in five survivors. Help to quit, including the free national quitline, makes success much more likely.
